Unstoppable Effy unveils her highly anticipated debut EP ‘Not What It Seems.’ A four-track smash of genre-fusing flavours including her high octane, acid-driven techno singles ‘Run It’with Mall Grab and ‘Not Yours,’ the EP also includes two new unheard singles; ‘Trip To Reality’ establishing her sound with grittier club productions, alongside more euphoric and emotive downtempo offerings as heard on ‘Vexed.’
Speaking on the EP, Effy says: “This is my debut EP so I have tried to encapsulate all of my sounds in one short project. Techno, breakbeat, bass, and some more softer melodic stuff. This project was mostly inspired by the feelings I had when clubs opened after the pandemic and finding my confidence as a DJ and artist.”
Since bursting onto the scene in 2019 for a Mixmag Live party alongside Helena Hauff, FAUZIA, and Jaguar, and with her debut single ‘Fluffy Clouds’ (2020) landing just before the pandemic, the North West England-raised now London-based DJ and producer Effy has continued to make her ascent having been hotly tipped by many as “one to watch.”
Despite it all, she churned out a further five solo singles, a track with Mall Grab, three remixes for Scuba, Earth Boys, and Franc Moody, and turned things up a notch with her 2020 celebration of female pleasure ‘Bodied,‘ and Summer 2021 single ‘Raging.’ She was named one of Pete Tong’s Future Stars of 2021, as well as holding down a residency at The Warehouse Project. Keen to use her space in dance music to celebrate women artists, she plans to launch her own club night and community-focused party of the same moniker Not Yours – named for the fact that women do not belong to anyone. Alongside a host of surprise guests, fans can also expect to see her close friends and fellow DJ pals.
Raised in a small town near Blackpool by her mum, Effy was immersed in music from a young age; her grandfather was a drummer and her mum listened to a lot of rock and Dido. She grew up listening to the likes of The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, and Pendulum, whetting her sonic appetite with some of electronic music’s greats. Though they were not the catalytic inspiration behind Effy’s career.
That she credits with hearing Maya Jane Coles’ 2011 silky house smash hit ‘What They Say’ on the radio and the surprise she felt hearing the track was made by a woman, and how it inspired her to believe she could do the same. As a teen, Effy began learning to DJ on her boyfriend’s decks and quickly caught the bug. A childhood affinity for writing songs developed into cutting up samples and looping sections of tracks, until she made the move to Logic to practice electronic production.
Coming up this year, Effy has a packed schedule. From upcoming shows at Junction 2 Festival, Parklife, Secret Garden Party, Warehouse Project, and her Ibiza debut, she will also be releasing more music. Garnering recent support from the likes of Spotify (Techno State cover star), Mary Anne Hobbs, Jaguar, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Notion, The Vinyl Factory, and more, this rising star is making a huge impact on the scene.
