Black Sun Empire + Bad Company UK @ Exit Festival 2017, Novi Sad, Serbia

Words: Miljan Milekić

When it comes to Exit Festival, one of my favorite parts is the X Bass program on the Main Stage. No matter who is headlining, once the clock ticks 2 am, Main Stage turns into a huge bass party. Over the years, some of the biggest names in drum and bass, dubstep, and the UK bass left their mark in this place, and this year was no different.

So, on day two, there was no dilemma about where to go. We did, however, miss Funtcase who was in charge of welcoming the sun, but we managed to see two legendary acts – Bad Company UK and Black Sun Empire. It was the British group who came in first with their energetic set, stronger for Messy MC on the mike. Not only they showcased their insane selection but also paid the tribute to the local scene – playing the remix of the ‘Belly of the Beast’ by Serbian reggae mastodon Hornsman Coyote, and the remix of ‘Lion King’ theme by Croatian producer Filip Motovunski. It didn’t take long ’till they fired up the party and caused the first moshpits.

Dutch legends Black Sun Empire were next, bringing their cold, dark neurofunk sound. The two-hour dose of cutting-edge production, heavy bass, and pure aggression was enough to keep the crowd going through the night. The duo had no mercy, delivering banger after banger, not allowing any break. Although their music is far from mainstream, and I doubt it was made to be played in front of 40 000 people, it worked just as well.
