Hardcore band Maya announce their Winter 2021 tour of Mexico with support from Salvaje and Hollow At Night, and presented by streetwear brand Seeds of Hate. The announcement comes following the release of their latest EP ‘Despierta.’ The band is going beyond sharing their distinct brand of hardcore by giving back to the communities that inspired it through charitable efforts for school supplies and resources for children in need throughout the tour:
“xWe are headed back to the motherland for the first time since 2012-2013. Mexico just has an energy that lights a flame in the air. The culture, the country, the food and most of all the people. Getting to be a part of the punk, metal, and hardcore community is huge for us. Most of our families have traveled into the US for more opportunities. Maya is headed back to Mexico because of the opportunities granted. Therefore, we have set up a GoFundMe for donations to a nonprofit organization that helps kids in need. Located in Guadalajara, Jalisco, MX – it is an education program to keep children out of the streets. Definitely something for the less fortunate. To be able to give back means everything to us, especially coming from the punk community.” shared the band.
Back in August, the band held a CD release event in San Jose, where fans could bring school supplies, later donated to cities with support programs during the tour and the nonprofit organization, Jezreel Ministerio de Alcance. The organization holds close ties to the band and assists children in need with support through a Christian church group. Those unable to attend the show can donate via the band’s GoFundMe link.
Maya emerged in the summer of 2004 in San Jose, California. Their formative years launched them to the same stage as some of the biggest names in hardcore as they prospered into prominent figures in the Bay Area local scene. Their close-to-home fanbase quickly expanded to reach across the world, which led to opportunities to tour across the country and throughout Mexico and Central America alongside heavy hitters including Terror, The Acacia Strain, Emmure, and more.
These days, the band is tapping into their heritage to share their stories as first-generation Mexican and African American musicians from Northern California. Their musical identity is fueled by DIY ethics, respect for their roots, and the determination to share the music they love with a culture that hasn’t always understood it. Their struggle is their inspiration. After two successful album releases to build their name, the band has found their distinctive voice in the fierce world of hardcore and metal with their new record ‘Despierta’ (Awakening), available now via Shark City Recordings.
