Nia Archives is back with a new single. This time, she samples one of her favorite reggae tunes ‘Young Lover’ by Cocoa Tea on a new single ‘18 & Over.’ A self-described ‘future classic’, she plays with the original vocal layering and chopping it up with breakbeats giving it a junglist feel, adding her own instantly recognizable vocals over the top for that classic Nia Archives energy.
Following the recent emotive banger ‘Forbidden Feelingz’ which was given the seal of approval from The Fader, NME, i-D, CRACK and more, Nia announces her new project of the same moniker due for release on the 3rd February 2022. Following a summer of touring some of the UK’s most prestigious clubs and festivals such as Fabric, Boiler Room, City Splash, Manchester International Festival, and more, this exciting six-track EP will see Nia writing music geared more towards the club and big sound systems. Exploring and presenting different sides of her artistry, this forthcoming project further solidifies her status as one of the most exciting new producers on the scene.
Dropping today alongside the news is a Taliable-directed video for ‘18 & Over’ that pays homage to UK Soundsystem culture and Nia’s Jamaican heritage – referencing 60/70s Jamaican Yardie styles and films like ‘Babylon’ and ’The Harder They Come’ with Nia donning a rare vintage Jamaican Adidas Tracksuit.
Speaking on the video, Nia says: “For the ’18 & Over’ video, I knew that the visuals had to be iconic as the song is an absolute banger. Working with Taliable who was the director and editor was super fun, I feel we creatively gelled really well to create this vibrant piece. The story starts with me smoking a cigarette, then I begin cycling. I come across my friend Andrew and we continue on around Hackney until we discover this euphoric Soundsystem motive. There we link up with members of the ‘Brighter Days Family’ to throw the maddest rave. The actual video was shot in my warehouse yard, I thought it would be sick to use that space as no one has ever shot a music video there – meaning it is unique to me. We kept things even more local by asking Hackney native Mark Solution if we could set up his wicked Solution Soundsystem – it was an honour to feature it in my video. There are also some references to the original record that I sampled for viewers to spot.”
