Liam Gallagher @ Exit Festival 2017, Novi Sad, Serbia

Words: Miljan Milekić

Started in 2000 as a protest, and call to action before the presidential elections that same year, Exit has always been a bit more than just a music festival. Fast forward 18 years and a few awards, Exit is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe. However, it still maintains the tradition of having at least a few revolutionary and rebellious acts. This year, the title went to Liam Gallagher.

Legendary Oasis singer came to Novi Sad months before the release of his solo debut ‘As You Were,‘ bringing an interesting combination of Oasis‘ and his own material. Strong opening with two Oasis classics – ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’ and ‘Morning Glory’ combined with his debut single ‘Wall of Glass’ got the crowd fired up. The only thing left to do was to keep the momentum. Combination of new songs like – ‘Greedy Soul,’ and ‘I’ll Get By’ and Oasis works such as ‘Slide Away’ and ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ did just that.

One of the special moments came with ‘Chinatown,’ played live for the first time ever, but being released only days ago, it failed to result in a massive reaction, which was left for the very end. The backing band withdrew from the stage after another Oasis song – ‘Be Here Now,’ only to leave Liam with an acoustic guitar player on stage for the grand finale – ‘Wonderwall,’ sung by every single person in the crowd.

To be honest, I was a bit afraid of this set – especially the crowd. Although it was Liam Gallagher, I was a bit unsure about whether an artist with his debut on the way and only a few released singles pull the headlining slot for 40 000 people. However, he did. His fans were happy, hardcore Oasis fans could go home happy. It was all down to casual fans, and I believe they couldn’t have anything to complain about. as you were mm x
