Delta Heavy @ Novi Sad Fair, Novi Sad, Serbia

Words: Miljan Milekić

For the past few years, Drop Sensei crew, a young organization of DJs, promoters, and bass music fanatics did a hell of a job putting Novi Sad on the drum and bass world map. Their events, headlined by some of the star names in the scene also featured many young, talented and upcoming artists earning cult status in the music scene of Novi Sad. Everything culminated at their biggest event so far – their 5th Birthday party headlined by the legendary London duo Delta Heavy.

More than a thousand bass heads gathered at the Hall 1/A of Novi Sad Fair to witness their first gig in Serbia and went home anything but disappointed. James Simon, Delta Heavy‘s representative for the occasion just had no mercy. With technical skills crazy enough to spread his vibes across four decks, he used his time to squeeze every single drop of sweat from anyone on the floor.

Combing smashing hits like ‘White Flag’ or ‘Ghost’ with a new banger like ‘Kaleidoscope,’ and amazing edits of Major Lazer‘s ‘Lean On’ or The Chainsmokers‘Closer’ he made a complete mess in the pit, making the crowd dancing, screaming and cheering for more. His control of the crown showed why Delta Heavy is one of the most wanted names on the scene today. With no difference, they can conquer every club or a festival stage anywhere in the world. Novi Sad was no different.

Apart from the headliner, the Drop Sensei crew carefully picked the rest of the lineup so that the crowd can get a better experience of diverse artists and different styles. Rising star of liquid drum and bass, Polish producer Silence Groove had the opening slot and the longest set of the night. During his two hours, he did his best to warm the crowd up, and he did it with confidence. Not only he had the crowd going, but he played for the full house, something that’s not always the case so early on.

The massive task of making the connection between the opening act and the headliner was given to the guest from Osijek – Safety Breaks. With his dark and heavy techstep sound, Croatian showed excellent technical skills and made the perfect transition. Closing slots were given to young Serbian DJs Friski, C Critz, and Tendo, with the latter offering a special surprise of having Iskaz, a Serbian hip-hop star on the stage with him. The night was hosted by MC Bo_JAH, arguably the best Serbian drum and bass MC.
