Monstercat Uncaged’s beloved genre-bending producer Godlands returns today with the drum & bass-meets-trap single, ‘Charmer.’ The record marks the second offering from Godlands’ upcoming EP, and showcases her groundbreaking sound design with a fusion of energetic trap elements, cinematic breaks, and drum & bass stylings driving the second half of the track.
Written as her mother was fighting for her life, Godlands’ fraught emotional state shines through the intense percussion and heavy beats. ‘Charmer’ is a testament to Godlands’ musical evolution, and highlights brand new sounds that will be fully showcased on her anticipated EP due this summer.
“’Charmer’ was made as a trauma response. I had just finished celebrating my birthday in Bali with a group of friends and my mum. We were just about to get on the airplane home before my mum collapsed in the airport. I took her straight to hospital and it turned out she had a parasite and COVID. My mum and I had to spend a week longer in Bali while she recovered. This song was made while she was recovering, and I believe I made this just to express my feelings. It was an extremely stressful and emotionally-charged week seeing my mum go through such immense pain and seeing her so sick,” Godlands shares.
With the anticipation of Godlands’ EP building, fans can get a taste of what is to come with ‘Charmer’ and her previous release, ‘U Want Me.’ This new slew of music nods to the narrative of the EP that consists of inspiration from her real-life experiences, personal battles, and emotions that are portrayed in each track.
